HORSE FEATHERS AND ANIMAL CRACKERS: A TRIBUTE TO QUEEN There are precious few bands that can inspire enough artists to fill a 2-disc tribute. Queen is one of those bands. From Deena Shoshkes’ (of The Cucumbers) countrified version of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” to The Serpenteens hard rock take on “Calling All Girls”, Horse Feathers & Animal Crackers features the most diverse collection of musicians yet on a Main Man Records release. Richie Ranno (from Starz), Derwood Andrews (from Generation X), Dennis Dunaway (from the original Alice Cooper group) and Cheetah Chrome (from The Dead Boys) are just a few of the names you may recognize alongside Main Man’s own Frankenstein 3000, Bad Biscut, True Love, Shawn Mars and The Easy Outs.
There are plenty of Queen “hits” on Horse Feathers & Animal Crackers (like the one-two punch of “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions” that opens the collection and the re-imagining of “Another One Bites The Dust”), but some of the real treats are the deeper album cuts that were chosen (”Tenement Funster”, “The Loser In The End”, “Sleeping On The Sidewalk” and “Drowse” to name but a few). All four of Queen’s songwriters are represented on "Horsefeathers and Animal Crackers". Freddie Mercury’s “Mustapha”, Brian May’s “Sail Away Sweet Sister”, John Deacon’s “You’re My Best Friend” and Roger Taylor’s “Modern Times Rock N' Roll” are just some of the highlights. Every single song on Horse Feathers & Animal Crackers stands on it’s own, but together they create a true tribute to one of the greatest bands in the history of modern music.

Shoreworld: by John Pfeiffer Horse Feathers And Animal Crackers– A Tribute To Queen Main Main Records Ice cream mogul Burt Robbins of Baskin Robbins fame once said of their 33 flavors of ice cream, “Not everyone likes all our flavors, but each flavor is someone’s favorite.” And that’s a pretty good analogy to scoop on top of New Jersey independent label Main Man Records. Their 33 unique flavors come in the form of 33 CD releases to date and while I’m sure there’s other independent labels somewhere that can boast of putting out lots of product, I don’t really know who might be doing it with the believable quality and consistency that these guys do. Main Man Records is made from the wholesome (or unwholesome) ingredients of real musicians and candy-coated fans of old school rock and roll music and the releases are all sprinkled with lots of diverse participants all over the top. Main Man is as colorful as a neighborhood popsicle wagon on a hot summer day and as the years have rolled on the label seems to have become unstoppable, scooping flavor after flavor of unique rock and roll style at the general public without selling themselves short or succumbing to dull popular trends of hip-hop and countrified bubble gum. Their latest releases demonstrate originality and tongue-in-cheek charm so sorely missing from most music offered nowadays. The latest is the brand new Queen tribute, Horse Feathers And Animal Crackers, a mother load of Queen hits and misses from artists as diverse as Cheetah Chrome from The Dead Boys, Riotgod, Dennis Dunaway from Alice Cooper’s band, The Tuff Darts, and Deena Shoshkes. Yea, the CD name might be based off of the Marx brother’s movies of the same names, but besides that it’s all Jersey. This disc features one of Main Man’s most ambitious groupings to date and when you heap that on top of the fact that this is a double record, you have a veritable trove of musical oddities to dig through. I especially love the artwork for this double disc, featuring the Main Man logo dude sporting the Freddie Mercury mustache and posing inside of a big gold “Q.” Campy and over the top, it completes the visual of what’s to come on Horse Feathers And Animal Crackers. The first standout track comes from Deena And The Laughing Boys who take the hit “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and wrap it in a simple country swing, laid back guitars, and spray the whole thing with Deena’s appetizing candy cane voice. Lazy and hazy, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” is a pure Deena Shoshkes shuffle at its best. Christian Beach also scores big with his rendition of “All Dead, All Dead” done in its Louisiana dirge-meets-Wilco style and once again demonstrating one of the area’s most powerful vocalists using their brain. I liked the pure 1982 metal resurrection of Blue Fox. Blue Fox—even the name spells spandex. Their cover of “Modern Time Rock And Roll” is fast, high harmonized, double-bass drummed and tight, tight, tight! I can smell the hairspray and rosewood burning of the necks of those Kramers, man! FSK 3000’s “Tenement Funster” puts you back in Max’s Kansas City with the ‘70s grit of Keith Roth’s crew, from vocals to guitars, it reigns down smoky, dirty and original. The turbo powered rhythm section of Clint Gascoyne and Eric Hoagland are the perfect pair for this gritty funhouse group. Veteran guitar guy Shawn Mars does his Ziggy Stardust-meets-Mott The Hoople thing with class on “Spread Your Wings” as does Rob Tanico and his version of “Sail Away Sweet Sister.” Side two features the cool tunage from Riotgod (these guys were just at the Stone Pony with The Parlor Mob) and their choice of “Death On two Legs” sounds expensive—and probably is. Riotgod is comprised of Monster Magnet’s Bob Pantella and Jim Baglino and guitarist Garrett Sweeny. Eerie newcomer vocalist Sunshine cuts a healthy swath out of the original fare, getting a lot of the authentic Queen tone into this tune. It’s good stuff for the Queen cover fan and one of my all-time Queen favorites. Dennis Dunaway proves that experience brings arrangement savvy. Yeah it’s “We Will Rock You” and you can’t go too far left or right, but he manages (along with Dimma) to steer this monstrous beast into an interesting direction. I could seriously hear this tune playing if I drove through deserts like in Mad Max. Matter of fact, this would be my theme song as I blew up approaching tanks, lunatics with doll heads and various four wheel drive vehicles. The Tuff Darts standout immediately with their rendition of “Somebody To Love” highly original and reminiscent of Springsteen, Zevon and Meatloaf, the Darts demonstrate why they’re still around after all these years. A great version from an underrated band! Cheetah Chrome takes his dirty shot at “Tie Your Mother Down” and plays no fancy schmancy production games here. This is rough and raw rock in it’s absolute purest form. There’s nothing pretty about this track as Chrome growls, guitars swirl, and the band regurgitates analog glory all over itself. It’s mean, it’s evil, it’s the middle finger in the face and I loved it. Frankenstein 3000 takes turn number two and blows out “Sheer Heart Attack” with over the top Destroyer attitude. The track launches fast and catches you right off guard in the best of ways. Rebellious and full of angst, this is a version that will get you pulled over for speeding down the Parkway. Whether you agree with my ramblings or you’re a fan of one of the bands, Horse Feathers And Animal Crackers is definitely worth adding to your boiling cauldron of rock and roll soup. Reviews by Jeff Penczak “Various Artists: "Horse Feathers & Animal Crackers: A Tribute to Queen" Rating: - 8 out of 10 Main Man Records This 2xCD tribute to Freddie and the boys succeeds where others have failed mainly thanks to the courage of the folks at Main Man, who elected to devote two full disks to the Hall of Fame quartet. Oh, all the hits are treated with the necessary reverence, but the 2-disk format gives the contributors the opportunity to delve deeper into the discography for little-known gems, like Christian Beach’s dirgy “All Dead, All Dead” (love the mandolin flourishes!), label glam metal stalwarts, Frankenstein 3000’s “Tenement Funster,” Blue Fox’s slice of Runaways-inspired adrenaline, “Modern Times Rock ‘N’ Roll” (the track is dedicated to former member and ex-Runaways drummer, the late Sandy West – Runaways fanatics should be able to figure out where the band’s name came from!), Bad Biscut *sic+’s punchy, power pop interpretation of “Need Your Loving Tonight,” Fouryearbeard (aka M. Frank)’s ripping, rapping, we-don’t-need-no-steenking-Beastie-Boys assault of “Fight From The Inside,” Rick Tedesco’s dirgy, acoustic death rattle, “She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettoes),” Melissa and Queens Blvd.’s beguiling dreamaway, “Is This The World We Created?,” and the raise ye drinks, lads singalong of the aptly-named AB & The Gin House Bandits’ “Drowse.” The variety of artists (and artistic styles) is another plus – this isn’t a collection of sweaty bar bands trying to clone Freddie’s personality or Brian’s lightning fretwork (although we get that, too!) – but mostly, these guys (and gals) have successfully incorporated Queen’s oeuvre into their own sensibilities, making most of these interpretations fresh and exciting. God knows we’ve heard “We Will Rock You,” “We Are The Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Another One Bites The Dust” about 500 times too many, but Richie Ranno’s All-Stars’ punky stab at “We Will Rock You,” (the only repeat here, you get three flavors, including Dennis Dunaway and Dimma’s fist-pumping rawk and the 10- and 11-year old trio, Happiez delivering a precocious a capella monstrosity that has to be heard to be believed), Deena *Shoshkes+ and The Laughing Boys’ fingersnapping, countrified take on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” Derwood Andrews’ down ‘n’ dirty trainwreck of “Bohemian Rhapsody” (mercifully minus the operatic arias), and The Easy Outs’ fast and furious power punk rendition of “Another One Bites The Dust,” all breathe fresh life into these classic rock chestnuts. Overall, there’s a little bit of everything in the mix: Doug Wahlberg Band’s speedfreak dash through “Stone Cold Crazy,” coed fireworks from The Parkway Charlies (“Dragon Attack”) and Under Pressure (“You’re My Best Friend”), vocal pyrotechnics courtesy the Thursday Night Collective (aka The Angry Pomeranian)’s “Under Pressure” (their alter ego’s “We Are The Champions” is also an inspired vocal exercize), Riotgod’s “Death on Two Legs” (lead screamer, Sunshine does the best Mercury impersonation here), Worro Pilkinson’s bluesy, ZZ Top-meets-Foghat trawl through “Sleeping On The Sidewalk,” Jack Brag’s whiskey-fueled singalong, “Fat Bottomed Girls,” New York’s seminal punkers, Tuff Darts recapturing past glories with a [Tommy] Frenzied (sorry!) burst of hi-nrg power punk on “Somebody To Love,” former Dead Boy Cheetah Crome’s no-holds-barred massacre of “Tie Your Mother Down” that borrows a little gasoline from Lemmy & Motorhead, Frankenstein 3000’s quite Dead Boys-like “Sheer Heart Attack,” the heavy metal thunder of Serpenteens’ “Calling All Girls” that sounds like it wandered in off the label’s Kiss tribute(!), Kimon’s folky “Hammer To Fall,” and the yee-hah, shitkicking campfire drawl-along of The Swales’ “’39” (Green On Red, Danny & Dusty, and Dream Syndicate fans take note). The set ends with an all-guitar-rendition of the ultimate tongue in cheek (although patently obvious) Queen tribute song from Dino Bochicchio that reiterates the label’s (and artists’) sense of humor and fun that obviously went into their loving preparation of this collection for you, whether you adore Queen or not. Another feather (no pun intended) in the cap of one of the country’s finest tribute labels – previous honorees include AC/DC, ‘80s’ hair bands (!), Bowie, Rush, Stones, Nirvana, Beatles, Kiss, et.al. The high quality of the material on offer bodes well for future tributes and should encourage all to check out earlier volumes. |
